United Way of North Central Iowa announces launch of the Dolly Parton Immagination Library

MASON CITY—United Way of North Central Iowa has announced it has received a transformational gift of $25,000 in support of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

The gift was made by a North Iowa family in loving memory of their son, Greg, who discovered the magic of words and reading in early childhood. His family hopes to ensure his legacy continues by passing this love of reading on to the children of north Iowa.

Genealogy discussion on family research planned for January 19

ALGONA— The Kossuth County Genealogical Society is hosting a monthly genealogy group discussion on family history research beginning in January.

First session will be held at the Algona Public Library on Thursday, January 19 at 2 p.m. The community is invited to attend.

Please have a short story to share from your family tree. Future sessions to be held on the third Thursday of the month.

Applications due Jan. 13 for cover crops program

DES MOINES—Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig reminds farmers and landowners who planted cover crops this past fall to apply for the state’s Crop Insurance Discount Program. Eligible Iowans can receive a $5 per acre discount on spring crop insurance premiums. The deadline to apply is January 13.

Auditions set for Almost Maine in Albert Lea

ALBERT LEA, MINN.—Albert Lea Community Theatre (ACT) announces auditions will be held Monday and Tuesday, January 23 and 24, for the play “Almost, Maine” at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. Broadway, in Albert Lea.

Kossuth County Community Foundation’s grant deadline is set for January 15

ALGONA—The deadline to submit grant applications to the Kossuth County Community Foundation’s 2023 grant cycle is 5 p.m. on January 15. Technical support will be available to applicants until 5 p.m. on January 13. The online grant application can be found on the community foundation’s website at www.kossuthccf.org.

Iowa farmland values hit all-time high

AMES—One year after skyrocketing 29 percent, the average value of an acre of Iowa farmland jumped another 17 percent, or $1,660, to $11,411 per acre.

The nominal value of an acre of farmland is again higher this year than at any point since Iowa State University began surveying values in 1941. When adjusting for inflation, the 2022 average value surpasses the previous inflation-adjusted record value set in 2013 for the first time.

Lending a hand to help others

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan students participated in the annual meal packaging event packaging 10,000 meals on December 12. Students in grades 3-12th came together in one hour shifts to use their time to fill meals. Students begin their time in prayer and learning about the area these meals are being sent to.
