Snow emergency ordinances for the city of Algona

ALGONA—The City’s snow ordinance regarding vehicles in city parking lots states that all vehicles in municipal parking lots must park on the designated side “A” and alternate to side “B,” as instructed in the snow emergency, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. for the duration of the snow emergency.

When a snow emergency is in effect, please be mindful of the City’s snow ordinance:

Little Al Foundation Concert raises over $10,000

LONE ROCK—The 6th Annual Little Al Foundation Concert was held Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Lone Rock Presbyterian Church. The foundation financially assists families who require travel  for the medical treatment of their child.

The foundation provides gift cards for dining, gas, groceries, lodging and more. So far this year the foundation has provided almost $60,000 to 40 families.

New entry-level CDL training program

 

DES MOINES-—The newly created Iowa Entry-Level Driver Training Program is to provide more opportunities for interested truck drivers to obtain their commercial driver's license (CDL) in Iowa.

Farm Bureau names agency of the year

Iowa Farm Bureau has named the North Central Agency and New Horizon Agency as recipients of the Agency of the Year award during Iowa Farm Bureau Federation’s 104th annual meeting held Dec. 6-7 in Des Moines.

This award is given annually to agencies who lead the state in securing new members, retaining existing members and providing excellent leadership in meeting the needs of all members and clients.

Kossuth County largest oat-producing county

DES MOINES—In 2022, Kossuth County was the largest oat-producing county in Iowa with 206,000 bushels, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Allamakee County was second with 167,000. Dubuque County was the third-largest oat-producing county with 155,000 bushels.

The highest yielding county was Kossuth with an average of 117.0 bushels per acre harvested. O’Brien County had the second-highest yield at 108.9 bushels per acre.

DES MOINES—Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig encourages Iowa farmers and producers to participate in the 2022 Census of Agriculture, which is underway across the nation through Feb. 6, 2023.

Statistics on milk production in Iowa

DES MOINES—Milk production in Iowa during November 2022 totaled 480 million pounds, up 7 percent from the previous November according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service -- Milk Production report.

The average number of milk cows during November, at 239,000 head, was unchanged from last month but up 14,000 from November 2021. Monthly production per cow averaged 2,010 pounds, up 20 pounds from last November.

Iowa producers have the chance to report inventories

DES MOINES—In January, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will survey about 41,000 cattle operations nationwide to provide an up-to-date measure of U.S. cattle inventories.

“This information helps producers make timely, informed business decisions and plan for herd expansion or reduction.

Registration open for January through March Master Gardener Home Gardening Series

AMES—The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener program will again host the Home Gardening Webinar Series, beginning in January and ending in March.

Designed for anyone who is interested in gardening or horticulture, the series aims to inspire and educate. The sessions are free and open to the public, although registration is required.

Merritt James Ricke

Allison Bryant and Jordan Ricke announce the birth of their son, Merritt James, on December 6, 2022, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center.

He weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces and was 21 inches long. Merritt is welcomed home by a brother, Axel, and a sister, Adeline.
