Secretary of Agriculture Naig encourages Iowans to apply for speciality crop block grants

AMES—Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig has announced the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is accepting applications for the 2023 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program through March 10.

AMES—Crop and livestock farmers who are working on preparing their 2022 income tax returns can review two useful documents for end-of-year determinations.

Year of education, outreach at farms

AMES—The research and demonstration farms operated by Iowa State University continued to be a popular place for educational events and field days in 2022.

More than 14,000 people, including school-age youth, visited the 15 farms throughout the year. Nearly 70 field days were held across the state, with topics that pertained to corn rootworm, forage management, tar spot, nitrogen management, turfgrass management, specialty crops and livestock production.

Health Harvest of Iowa plans field day, Feb. 4

CLEAR LAKE—Healthy Harvest of North Iowa is planning a field day to learn about and celebrate access to locally produced and organic groceries. The event will be held at Simply Nourished in Clear Lake from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 4.  Simply Nourished is located at 419 Main Ave.

Aviation medical exams offered

ALGONA—Kossuth Regional Health Center is offering FAA flight physicals for pilots in need of a medical certificate. These accurate exams are performed by Josiah Brinkley, MD a Federal Aviation Examiner, designated by the FAA.

The FAA medical exam is a straight-forward physical to assess a person’s health history and overall fitness for flight, including having their vision and hearing checked.

Black Belt Success

Felicity Huemiller has big dreams and goals for her future in martial arts. Some day the 15-year-old Algona resident hopes to reopen a taekwondo school in Algona.

Huemiller is on the right track to accomplish that goal as she continues to attain success in taekwondo. Her most recent accomplishment was earning the rank of 1st Degree Black Belt Recommend.

Algona, Garrigan band members selected for Karl King Honor Bands

FORT DODGE—Thirteen members of the Algona Middle School Band and 12 members of the Bishop Garrigan Band were selected to participate in the Karl King Honor Bands. The honor bands performed at St. Edmond Catholic School in Fort Dodge on Saturday, January 14.

These musicians had their performance resumes submitted by their teachers and the top students were chosen for the bands. The students spent the day in rehearsal in preparation for the evening concert.

Titonka plans big party this summer for Quasquicentennial

 

TITONKA—Titonka's Quasquicentennial Committee rolled out the red carpet the weekend of January 7 when they held a "Snowball Gala" in Titonka to kick off fundraising for their 2023 Quasquicentennial celebration.    

Titonka resident Leroy Hoffman from Hoffman Auctions volunteered his time and services for the live auction.

More than $20,000 was raised to use toward the 125th summer celebration to be held June 24 and 25.

Morwens Kiwanis makes $25,000 gift to splash pad
