Advance Award Winners

Kossuth County Advance publisher Brad Hicks presented plaques to the 2022 Advance Award winners during a ceremony held Thursday, January 12 at the Algona Publishing office. This is the third year the Advance has honored people who do a bit extra to help others and enrich their communities. Due to the pandemic, this was the first year the paper has been able to hold an awards ceremony. The Advance will begin taking nominations in the spring for 2023 winners.

ALGONA—Four of Algona’s finest storytellers were at the Algona Active Senior Center last Saturday, January 21.  Professional storyteller David Okerlund held a storytelling clinic that morning providing tips and tricks to improve public speaking and the stories were presented to a packed room that afternoon.

Fun planned for everyone during Frostbite Olympics

ALGONA—There will be fun activities for all ages during the Frostbite Olympics in Algona from Thursday, February 2 to Saturday, February 4.

Activities begin on Thursday evening with the Morwens Kiwanis Chili Cookoff from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Algona VFW. There is no fee and awards for People’s Choice and Judges’ Choice will be presented.

Corey Rasch

named to

president’s list

MANCHESTER, N.H.—Corey Rasch of Bancroft has been named to the 2022 fall president’s list at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester.

Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above for the reporting term are named to the president’s list.

Hospice of the Heartland offers grief support group

ALGONA—Hospice of the Heartland is again offering a grief support group for those struggling with the loss of a loved one. Beginning February 1, the grief support group will meet twice per month with the last meeting scheduled for April 12.

This group will meet at Kossuth Regional Health Center in the community health conference Room C every other Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m.

DAR honors Veterans

ALGONA—The Algona Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution Veteran Remembrance Project honors the military service of Veterans in Kossuth County. This list of Veteran funerals in November and December 2022 signifies a group of patriots who defended the country’s freedoms during their lifetime. DAR compiles this information as provided by funeral homes in Kossuth County. DAR extends gratitude to the families of these Veterans.

AMU Board approves loan application for business

ALGONA—The Algona Municipal Utilities Board of Trustees has approved a recommendation from the AMU Revolving Loan Fund committee for an application for a loan for $31,250 to Amanda and Darren Arthur to assist with a portion of the financing for the purchase of a building at 107 East State Street in Algona.

The building will be the home for their new business, Cultivate Family Shop.

Annual KRHC audit report released

 

ALGONA—CliftonLarsonAllen LLP has released an audit report on Kossuth Regional Health Center. The health center’s revenues totaled $45,475,147 for the year ended June 30, 2022, an 8.25 percent decrease from the prior year.

The revenues included $38,155,810 in net patient service revenue, $5,306,124 of other operating revenue, $985,641 of noncapital contributions and grants, and $1,028,172 in other nonoperating revenues.

BGHS honor roll students

ALGONA—Bishop Garrigan High School has announced the students who qualified for the second quarter honor roll for the 2022-23 school year. Those with an asterisk (*) earned a 4.0 grade point average.

Northern Iowa man wins $250,000 lottery prize

 

 

CLIVE—A northern Iowa man has won a $250,000 lottery prize.

Jason Lowe of Bancroft won the 15th top prize in the Iowa Lottery’s “$250,000 Extreme Cash” scratch game. He purchased his winning ticket at Car-Go Express, 112 N. Long St. in Bancroft, and claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Clive.

City audit complete

 

 

ALGONA—T.P. Anderson & Co., P.C. reported that the City of Algona’s receipts totaled $16,486,928 for the year ended June 30, 2022. The receipts included $4,170,617 in property tax, $2,786,679 in charges for service, $4,079,234 in intergovernmental receipts and $1,032,052 in local option sales tax.

Free business start up event

ALGONA—Tietz Entrepreneurial Center and Iowa Lakes Community College will offer a free Business Startup event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on February 13 at the Algona Campus located at 2111 Highway 169 North.

The event welcomes people who are interested in entrepreneurship and don’t know where to start or who have an idea that they think could be a great business or side hustle and need guidance on taking their concept to the next level.
