Bomgaars Ladies Night supports KRHC OB Department

ALGONA—The Kossuth Regional Health Center Foundation and Algona Bomgaars teamed last fall to host a Ladies Night that raised more than $3,500 to support the KRHC Obstetrics Department.

Bomgaars Ladies Night is an annual “shop for a cause’ event where Bomgaars locations across the nation choose a local healthcare facility to support by offering discounts, treats and drawings for women when shopping.

National FCCLA Week celebrated

FCCLA is a new organization to Algona High School that started three years ago; the organization itself has been around since 1945. FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. The organization was created to help share the importance of family and consumer science education.

Easter egg events planned

WHITTEMORE—There are two Easter egg events planned in Whittemore on Saturday, March 30.

The Noah’s Park egg hunt begins at 10 a.m. for 4 yrs. and under; 10:10 a.m. for ages 5-8; and 10:20 a.m. for ages 9-12.  In case of rain, the event will be moved indoors to the community center.

Events at Whittemore Library

WHITTEMORE—A family story-time is set for Tuesday, March 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Whittemore Public Library. Staff invite the whole family to come check-out storytime.

If a child is not quite old enough to attend story-time, staff asks that an adult accompanies the child to experience story-time with them.

Tips on reading to children will be shared as well as a preview given of the new Early Literacy STEM kits available in the library.

USDA releases agricultural prices report

AMES—The average price received by farmers for corn during January 2024 in Iowa was $4.84 per bushel according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Agricultural Prices report. This was 5 cents below the December price and $1.90 below January 2023.

The January 2024 average price received by farmers for soybeans, at $12.60 per bushel, was 40 cents below the December price and $2 below the January 2023 price.

Iowa landowners sought for new farmland education program

AMES—A unique group of specialists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is organizing a new program to help landowners incorporate soil health principles into their farmland. The program brings together specialists in agronomy, conservation, finance and law to assist landowners in making beneficial decisions for their land.

Abigail Ann Berte

Michael and Kelly (Bormann) Berte of Lakota announce the birth of their daughter, Abigail Ann, on February 27, 2024, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center. She weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and was 19 3/4 inches long.

Abigail is welcomed home by a sister, Laramie Rose Berte.

Maternal grandparents are Paul and Mary Ann Bormann of Bancroft. Paternal grandparents are Steve and Mary Kay Berte of Lakota.

 

College Notes

Goetz receives second place for newscast

WAVERLY—Joseph Goetz of Buffalo Center was one of 29 Wartburg College students to be recognized for their work with student media at the annual Iowa College Media Association Awards.

Goetz received second place in Best Video Newscast. KWAR, the student-run radio station, received the Audio Excellence of the Year Award.
