BGHS Speech Advances To State

Bishop Garrigan earned three division I or “excellent” ratings at the district large group speech contest on Saturday, January 21 in Spencer. Two improvisation groups (one with Audi Crooks, Violet Bode, Sam Plathe, Brendan Plathe and Benjy Trainer; and the other with Scott Bormann, Gavin Swift and Tate Foertsch) and the musical theatre group with Savannah and Isabella Waechter all earned I’s. These groups now advance to the state speech contest February 4 at Le Mars.

Whittemore Chili Cook-off Fun

The Whittemore Community Betterment Club sponsored the highly anticipated return of the chili cook-off contest on Saturday, January 21 at the American Legion Hall in Whittemore.

Cook will lead Iowa Pork Producers

CLIVE—A Buchanan County pig farmer, Trish Cook, is the new president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA). The change in leadership took place following the IPPA annual meeting on January 24.

KRHC honored with two Women’s Choice Awards

ALGONA—Kossuth Regional Health Center has been awarded two Best Hospital Women’s Choice Awards, one for obstetrics and one for emergency care.

KRHC CEO Dar Elbert said for the obstetrics award KRHC was among the top one percent honored and listed nationally from data publicly available from more than 4,000 hospitals. For emergency care, the hospital was listed in the top seven percent of hospitals.

Building Better Birders and Citizen Scientists Workshops

 

 

SMITH LAKE—For the past two years, Kelly McKay, along with Clinton County Conservation and Nahant March Education Center have been presenting a program designed to create a citizenry with better bird identification skills to promote participants getting involved with local citizen science projects.

New bacon event planned during Frostbite Olympics

ALGONA—As part of the Frostbite Olympics festivities planned by the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce, an "Achin for Bacon - It's All About the Bacon Bloody Mary Bar" event is set for Saturday, February 4 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the VFW in Algona. Besides bacon, a large variety of items to add to drinks and some bacon appetizers and desserts are planned.

Ivy Lynn Atkinson

Tyler and Bridget (Murphy) Atkinson of Algona announce the birth of their daughter, Ivy Lynn, on January 16, 2023, at Trinity Regional Medical Center/UnityPoint Health in Fort Dodge.

She weighed 8 pounds, 4 1/4 ounces and was 19 3/4 inches long. Ivy is welcomed home by a sister, Scarlett.

$72,700 reported to the 2022 Great Iowa Treasure Hunt in Kossuth County

 

 

DES MOINES—In celebration of National Unclaimed Property Day, held annually on February 1, State Treasurer Roby Smith is sharing the newest report of unclaimed funds in the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt for Kossuth County. "In 2022, more than $72,700 was reported to the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt for Kossuth County residents, meaning you or someone you know could have money waiting to be claimed," stated Smith.

Activities planned at Fenton Public Library

FENTON—Activities at the Fenton Public Library during February will include  a book club meeting on Thursday, February 9 at  2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., and Thursday, February 23 at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The club is reading This Blessed Earth by Ted Genoways. Call 515-889-2333 to join the club.

IOWA CITY—Three Algona residents graduated from the University of Iowa in Iowa City following the 2022 fall semester.

Iowa Forage and Grassland Council Conference will feature speakers

AMES— The  Iowa Forage and Grassland Council annual conference returns to Ames in 2023 with a full day of information. Set for February 28, the event will be held at Reiman Gardens, 1407 University Blvd., just to the southwest of Jack Trice Stadium.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with a welcome and introductions at 10 a.m. Two presentations are on tap for the morning session, and lunch at noon is followed by the IFGC annual meeting.
