Celebrating Catholic Schools week Jan. 29-Feb. 3

Many events were held last week at Bishop Garrigan Schools in honor of Catholic Schools Week.

North Union mime group performing for All-State

 

 

AMES—The North Union mime group will be performing at the IHSSA All-State Festival on Feb. 18 at the Iowa State Univ. campus. The girls will be performing in the Scheman Center at 3:50 p.m.

The group consists of Allyson Nelson, Jacey Welbig and Raegan Nielsen. Allyson and Jacey are sophomores and Raegan is a freshman. This is Jacey’s second time performing at All-State, and Allyson and Raegan’s first time performing.

3 Division I’s for AHS Speech

SPENCER—On January 21, 27 students from Algona High School participated in the Iowa High School Speech Association’s District Large Group Speech contest. This was held at Spencer High School. AHS brought eight events to compete. Three of those events earned Division I ratings.

Great crowd attends Morwens Kiwanis chili cook-off

The Morwens Kiwanis Club sponsored a chili cook-off during the Frostbite Olympics on Thursday, February 2 at the VFW in Algona. Approximately 100 to 150 people attended the event which featured eight chili entries by individuals, businesses or organizations. The Leadership Algona Class members also sponsored a bake sale.

Three students place at Special Olympics

ALGONA—On Tuesday, January 24, Algona students, Kolby Preuschl, Gaje Peterson and Katelyn Ortloff, traveled to the Bedell Family YMCA in Spirit Lake to compete in Special Olympics basketball skills. They demonstrated their basketball skills through passing, dribbling and shooting.

ALGONA—Algona High School’s Academic Decathlon team started their competition season last week. They competed at the Iowa Lakes campus in Algona on January 26-27 for their regional qualifier.

BINGO with a twist

 

 

ALGONA—BaconFest was a little different this year during the Frostbite Olympics. Part of the festivities included Bacon Bingo and a Bloody Mary bar on Saturday, February 4 at the VFW.

Mandie and Tracy Studer, and Joanne and Beanie Bode were in charge of nine-plus Bingo games. They made the games a little more challenging by having people moving spots and  switching cards.

53rd annual science fair

 

 

ALGONA—Come view more than 50 Middle School Science Fair Projects at the 53rd annual Algona Middle School Science Fair.

The science fair will be held on Thursday, February 9 at the Algona Middle School Gym.

Displays are open to the public starting at 4 p.m. with student awards occurring at 5:15 p.m.

Place winners will attend the State Science and Technology Fair on March 30-31 at Iowa State University.

Pork in Pantry program encourages giving pork to area food pantries

CLIVE—The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) has announced they will support county pork producer organizations in Iowa in their efforts to make pork donations to local food pantries.

The Pork in the Pantry program will reimburse county pork groups that make pork product donations to food pantries in the same county.

Women invited to grain marketing and outlook workshop, March 9

ALGONA—A workshop will be held in March for women wanting to learn more about grain marketing.

The Women in Ag: Grain Marketing and Outlook Workshop, will be held in Algona on Thursday, March 9, at the Kossuth County ISU Extension and Outreach office (1121 Highway 18, E.).  A meal will be served from 5:30 to 6 p.m., with the workshop following at 6 p.m.

Pharmacists Mutual Employee Foundation commits $25,000 to Central Park splash pad project

 

ALGONA—The Pharmacists Mutual Employee Foundation has pledged $25,000 to the Central Park Redevelopment Project and Splash Pad Campaign with the City of Algona’s Parks and Recreation Department.

“We are thankful that the Employee Foundation at Pharmacists Mutual chose to support this community project. Thanks to all the Pharmacists Mutual employees who contributed to this fund and made this gift possible,” said Nick Diers, Recreation Manager at the City of Algona.

Haggard-Twogood Charitable Trust pledges $100,000 to Central Park Redevelopment Project

 

ALGONA—The Haggard-Twogood Charitable Trust Board of Trustees announced their commitment as a major donor to the Central Park Redevelopment Project and Splash Pad Campaign, with a pledge of $100,000.

ALGONA—Algona Municipal Utilities Board of Trustees has set Wednesday, February 22 at 11 a.m. as the date and time for a public hearing on the proposition of approving and consenting to the amended and restated Lehigh-Webster Transmission and Webster Terminals Facilities and Operating Agreement.

Births

Harvey Harmon

Tiffany Espinoza and Isaac Harmon of Algona announce the birth of their son, Harvey Harmon, on January 26, 2023, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center. He weighed 8 pounds and was 20 inches long.

Harvey is welcomed home by brothers, Oliver Espinoza and Frankie Espinoza.

Tiffany and Isaac are both employed at Fratco.
