DES MOINES – Returning for a third consecutive season, the State Historical Society of Iowa’s book club kicks off this month with a new lineup of entertaining and thought-provoking books and authors.

Free Memoir writing 101 class

 

 

SPENCER—Everyone has a story to share, but who will tell it? For people interested in telling their own stories, Iowa Lakes Community College is offering a free Memoir Writing 101 Lunch and Learn. Steve and Mary McSwain Steele, the co-authors of "Times They Are A-Changin'…," will lead the class on the Spencer campus on Thursday, April 20, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

A fun family night at West Bend Mallard School

There were plenty of fun learning activities available for families at the West Bend-Mallard Literacy and Math Family Night at the school in West Bend on Tuesday, March 7.

Approximately 40 people attended the event held for the West Bend-Mallard Little Rines 3 and 4 year old Preschool students. Preschool teachers are Mrs. Bormann and Mrs. Kenyon.

Fish fry proceeds benefit students

Tom Eischen (left) and Bruce Gervais were two of approximately 70 volunteers working at the Knights of Columbus Council #952 Fish Fry Friday night, March 10, at the Columbia Events Center in Algona. Volunteers at the meal included high school students, Knights of Columbus members and their families.

Bishop Garrigan Gala with CornerStone theme is March 25

ALGONA—It was a record breaking year for the Bishop Garrigan School’s Gala event in 2022 with $413,000 raised for updating classrooms, technology, teacher needs and the general fund, which supports teacher’s salaries, general operating expenses and keeping tuition at a reasonable cost to families.

All Iowa Honor Dance Team

A total of 13 dance team members from the four area schools in the Kossuth County Advance coverage area were selected as members of 2023 All-Iowa Honor Dance Team that performed at the state girls’ basketball tournament in Des Moines on Saturday, March 4.

Chamber ribbon cutting at Cultivate Family Shop

A ribbon cutting and coffee hosted by the Algona Area Chamber of Commerce was held at the new Cultivate Family Shop in downtown Algona on Friday, March 10. Mandy Arthur is the store owner and manager. The store features clothing for ages newborn to toddler and women’s clothing and accessories.

Mandy and her husband, Darren’s daughter, Letty, helped her mom cut the ribbon. Next to them is Darren holding their son, Brigham.

Read Across America Day

Students at Corwith-Wesley-Lu Verne, (CWL) Elementary School celebrated Read Across America Day recently. Three librarians from Corwith, Wesley and Lu Verne came to school and read to the students and created a craft with them.

Hunting with Heroes honors companies

Snap-on has been a partner with the Salute To Veterans race program Summer Series since it started in 2017. They have provided the second place trophies in the series at all three tracks. Bernie Becker with Hunting with Heroes said Hunting with Heroes is proud that Snap-on helps support the Veterans in Northern Iowa and southern Minnesota area.

Ingalls honored at chamber coffee

Chamber Ambassador President Sarah Mayer presented Dana Ingalls with the Congeniality award at a chamber coffee held at Iowa State Bank’s newly renovated drive-up-office on Friday, Feb. 24. Thuls named Iowa Master Pork Producers

AMES—Steve and Lisa Thul of rural Bode were named Iowa Master Pork Producers for 2022 by the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) and Iowa State University Extension, who co-sponsor the program.

The Thuls were honored at the Iowa Pork Congress banquet in January at the Iowa Event Center in Des Moines. The couple resides in Delana Township and has a small row crop operation as well as a wean to finish hog site contract feeding with Smithfield Foods.
