Take care in how we use words
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me.
This phrase from the 1830s has been passed on generation to generation to help children ignore taunting from others so that they may remain calm rather than use physical fighting to stop the teasing. My own grandmother advised me to use these words at a time when I was about 8 years old. I was in a new school, and my father had just become the chief of police in town. When kids found out about my father, the teasing was intense.
