Pandemic halts a Memorial Day tradition
For only the second time in her life, Deb Specht didn’t throw a wreath into the Upper Des Moines River at Veterans Park on Memorial Day with members of the local American Legion and VFW standing by.
The first time she was out of town. This year, the annual Memorial Day ceremony was cancelled because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. “It was so sad. It is a unique experience, an informal way I can show my love of country,” Specht said. “It is sad to not have done it this year because a lot of the guys from the VFW and American Legion are getting up there in age.”
